Domestic cats descend mainly from the African wildcat. Around 9,000 to 10,000 years ago, early farmers stored grain that attracted rodents, and wildcats that hunted them began living near people. Humans tolerated and later encouraged these helpful hunters. Over generations, the friendliest cats stayed close, gradually becoming the companions we know today.
