The Iriomote cat (Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis) is one of the rarest wild cats on Earth. It lives only on Iriomote Island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, an area of about 289 square kilometers (112 square miles). Scientists first described it in 1967. Experts estimate only around 100 individuals remain. The species is listed as Critically Endangered. Habitat loss, roadkill, and isolation threaten its survival on this small Ryukyu Island.
